IRANIAN REVOLUTION (crisis)
Our committee covers the Iranian Revolution, a series of events that took place in Iran between January of 1978 and February of 1979. The revolution began with widespread protests against the regime of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, who was seen as corrupt and oppressive. And, this movement was led by various groups, including religious leaders, leftists, and nationalists — all of whom were united (somewhat) in their opposition to the Shah's regime. The protests eventually escalated into a full-scale revolution which ultimately forced the Shah to flee the country in January 1979. The revolution transformed Iran into an Islamic republic, with Khomeini playing a significant role in the new government. This event has significantly impacted history because the revolution led to tensions between Iran and neighboring countries, particularly Iraq, which would later lead to the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
